Having swapped in past 3 weeks from sse to British gas, thinking due to smart meter no more meter reading again, however after switching receive a letter from bg asking for reading as smart meter not compatible. This is an issue as we are disabled and access is very hard to read to get the reading. Wondering what if any advice is around to eleviate this issue.
Do you haver a SMETS2 meter though?
I suspect not given the 'not compatible' letter from BG.
I would agree with Robin that in your case the In-Home Device (IHD) would be the easiest way to get meter readings if it is still working. You do have to dig into the menus sometimes to get to the meter details but it is often the easiest way to get a meter reading even if you do not use the other capabilities of the device.

I've still got my in house display from SSE (from 2015) and it still works so I can get meter reading data from it even though I'm on my fourth different supplier. The meter doesn't communicate with the supplier but the IHD still reads the meter (the pricing info doesn't work anymore but was wrong, even when it was installed in the first place). So if you've still got your IHD it should solve your problem.

You need to check on your IHD and see what info you can still get from it.  Hopefully you will still get the actual meter reading from the leccy meter - you will need to get someone to look at the meter and the IHD to ensure that they do read the same (in kwh). Be aware though that if you've got gas it's extremely important that you are reading Cubic Metres  (M3) on both the gas meter and IHD and not kwh.

My conclusion is that it's a trade-off whereby you can't have the best of both worlds i.e. cheap tariff and good technological capability.  It's either one or the other depending on your priority.
Only if you decide to go directly with any the 'big 6' suppliers- all of whom support smets2 meters. The trick is to switch to the big suppliers using a price comparison site such as MSE Cheap Energy Club or Uswitch and that way, you get the best of both worlds. Despite iving in one of the most expensive regions for energy (North Scotland), I'm paying 2.05p kWH for gas and 13.90p kWH for electric. This is with EDF where I signed up through MSE CEC.
  • Are SMETS2 meters worth getting? I'm currently waiting for one to be installed from Octopus

Not all suppliers do monthly statements. As far as I know most of the big ones are still on quarterly bills/statements, and some of the newer suppliers do this too.
I have a SMETS2 meter and I've just moved to Eon, in my account details they know I have a smart meter (I can tick boxes for data submission for half hourly or daily meter readings to be submitted to them) but on my main page when I login it says "We need you to submit a meter reading by x ..".  When I look at my meter read history with them there is my opening reading listed (I provided this) one reading that must have been "smart" via the DCC, and nothing since.  Hmm...
I've just left E.ON having had smets2 meters installed by them last year. They were taking monthly readings automatically from my meters and bills were issued every quarterly. Never had any billing issues at all and I never had to submit any meter readings manually.

I'm now with EDF and surprisingly they issue bills every 6 months - I was expecting quarterly billing at the very least. Anyway I called them up, they said If I want bills more frequently I can just call them up every X months and they will take meter readings there & then (remotely) and then issue me with a new bill a few days later. So I'll just call them every 1-2 months to get bills.

Get on the Priority Services Register and ask them to send a meter reader round.
