Ferry booked in August - should I cancel?

We booked a ferry in January to go to Spain on 9 August and were planning to drive up into France. We no longer want to go as the risk of 2 days each way in a confined environment seems too much risk to me and 2 weeks of quarantine on return would be ridiculous. However, the ferries are restarting now (although I fear may be stopped again if we start to see a new wave). Should I cancel now and lose my 50% deposit or hang on in the event that Brittany Ferries cancels it for me and offers a bigger refund? I'd assume that they'll have to forcibly cancel some bookings to restrict numbers on board.

Chances are they will be going and will have to cancel some bookings, so it is up to you if you want to risk it or not.
  • Nobody can really advise, only say what they would do after weighing it all up.   I would hang on but that is because IF it did all go ahead I would go.   If you do not want to go now, no matter what and you are prepared to lose the 50% then that is obviously the way for you to go.    As you say nobody knows now whether you will be permitted to go.   I do feel though that the 2 weeks quarantine will either be scrapped or we will all be back in lockdown so I wouldn't base my decision on this.

The ferry companies are going to be ramping up full swing on routes where traffic will be moving, and I regret to inform you that UK to Spain is one of these routes. It is highly, highly unlikely that the ferry company will be wanting to cancel sailings when their profit year is based on the success of two months of tourist trade, the August and July sailings to Spain are a goldmine for onboard spend.

For that reason, I'd say you'd be risking it if you are hoping they'll cancel.
