Claiming on a Critical Illness and Life Policy

Options
My husband and myself had a joint critical illness and life insurance policy.  Unfortunately my husband passed away 6 weeks ago and had to have a postmortem.  The cause of death has been listed as Sudden Cardiac Death, and underneath that Ischaemic Heart disease.
He never knew he had this, and the fact the cause of death says sudden I would have thought would be enough for the Life Insurance to sort the claim out.
They are really dragging their feet on this, and its causing me needless stress.  They have now rang me and told me they are asking for the full postmortem report from the coroners office.  I just don't understand what they are trying to achieve with this, so much so I rang the coroner myself and they confirmed it will be classed as a natural cause of death.  Has anyone else experienced anything like this, I just want to know if there is an end in sight for this.

Yes, others will have experienced it. They need to establish if the cause of death is covered.

There is definitely an end in sight. The quicker you can get the report to them the better.
  • I would have thought a natural cause of death would be covered I can't see anything in the policy that suggests it wouldn't be.  Really frustrating.
They had the report Wednesday just gone.

When you apply for a life policy and are currently awaiting test results,  it would be normal for the proposal to be paused until the test results are known.

Similarly,  when a death occurs  and  a postmortem takes place,   it is  not unreasonable  to require the postmortem results  before settling the claim.

The vast majority of deaths are natural causes..

I am sorry for your loss.

I cannot be of much help Lisa but my father passed away couple months ago due to cardiac arrest (thats what I was told when the doctor rang me from hospital to inform me what had happened) but on death certificate they put down Covid 19 as primary cause and one of the secondary reasons was Ischaemic Heart disease. My father never had Ischaemic Heart disease or any heart related condition... I too was not sure where/how they came up with that one when the death certificates arrived!

Everything is happening more slowly during the pandemic.
our post has been taking about 1 week at times, we don’t get Saturday deliveries and at times it seems like every other day service.
some people are off sick or quarantining at the moment, other (like me) are not cross contaminating and working every other week so there are delays.
i would try not to worry (easy to say I know) as this may be just the general delays at the moment. They are just doing their job.

    Sorry for your loss.

They are not dragging their feet.  It is normal for where a postmortem has been carried out for the insurer to request the report.
