Car insurance temporary cover

Im looking to drive into france and take a friend along with me, i am hoping he will do some of the driving. I am trying to get temporary cover and in my eyes for two weeks its expensive. Tried to add him to my current policy which expires in 2 months time and its the same price increase as the temporary cover (im with a broker costs £180).
As theres not much time left on my current policy i have looked at renewing but starting the whole quote with this additional driver added as a named driver permanently on my insurance and the quote for the year is roughly what i paid for this years policy.
Am i able to do this? start a new policy before the old one has expired? if so do i just cancel my existing policy? do i explain to my new potential policy provider what i am doing and im sure they will want to know why im cancelling a policy early?
Anyone got any advice here please?

You can get another policy but with zero no claims its going to be costly and will either insurance object to the car being
insured already? 2 claims for a single incident?
Cancel the policy yes but with just 2 months left it may cost more than the full premium when you add
the admin fees. Cancel a policy for whatever reason you like as long as you pay the bills.
