Lifted Slate Roof Tiles

Hello
I've noticed that some of my slate roof tiles have started to lift, property is 10-years old. Is this normal or a sign of something else going on? I only noticed this today.

Have you noticed an increase in wasps or bees near that corner of the property?
It's possible that there is a nest under there and these can get extremely big (I had a wasp nest in my attic and it was the size of a large football) so it's possible that this is what you have and it's starting to push up on the tiles.
A build up of moss can also cause this but looking at the picture, the rest of the roof seems to be in very good condition so this is unlikely to be the reason.

As there are 3 and possibly 4 tiles all along the same line that are lifting, it could also be a problem with one of the rafters.
Do you have easy access into the attic? to have a look at it from the inside?
  • Thanks for your reply. I haven't noticed an increase in wasps or bees. During heavy rain/storms I do find lichen on the floor so perhaps this could be doing it? I've never ventured into the loft/attic space but will take a look. Thanks.

It could be a build up of moss but generally slate doesn't attract moss/lichen.
  • Some of my neighbours are also doing it, some similar with 2/3 in a line and some more random. I live in a costal region so now think it could be caused by the wind lifting them. What do you think?
  • Been up in the attic/loft and rafters look fine as well. No cracks, bowing or obvious signs of any movement.

Have a look up the verge and see if there are 2 rivets holding them down. They might have left them out, as it's a bit more hassle having to drill the holes in the correct positions, but if left out the slates often lift.

We have a number of houses near us with these fibre slates and all have a few lifting like yours. I was told it was something to do with the copper pins/nails degrading allowing movement in the slate. Maybe look to get them re fixed?
