am i in the doghouse or what!!
tried to replace the battery in the wife's iphone 6s. it would transpire that in so doing i have damaged one of the ribbon cables inside meaning that although the phone and screen turns on, none of the touch screen reacts to a touch so i cannot unlock the phone. now i have had to order her a replacement phone but in the mean time i had an old iphone 4 that i have managed to resurrect for her to make calls and texts BUT she has no contacts in this phone at all. it is running iOS 7 so that is how old it is!!
i tried setting up the iphone 4 from an icloud back up but it tells me there is no backup found, gulp, so i suppose my question is:
is there anyway, when her replacement iphone arrives that i can retrieve the info from her damaged iphone and get her contacts, whatsapp messages and photos saved on the iphone 6 back?
many thanks in advance.

Contacts are usually backed up to iCloud, if you had iCloud backups switched on (I think they are on by default), they should download to the new phone automatically - assuming it's an iPhone that you've bought.
WhatsApp messages are separate, if WhatsApp wasn't set to back up it's messages then they will be lost unless you can access them in the old phone. This will be very difficult because you'd need to make it past the iPhone's security to access anything, but you can't type a pinccode in with a broken screen. I'd try searching some Apple support forums in case someone has found a way around that.

i thought icloud was on but the iphone 4 said there was no backup found (unless as its such an old phone it wouldn't work like that anyway?).
Could be. It's not a supported phone anymore. I'm not sure basically, but it'll be clear when you get the new phone.

You can sign on to iCloud via a PC or any device with a Web Browser, to check if any backups are there: https://www.icloud.com0
