Can I claim on flight delay if I never check in?

I have 4 flights booked for 4th Jul and I won't be using them and Ryan Air are looking to charge me £670 to swap seats for another day a year away (be cheaper to book them again) so my only hope that the flight is cancelled (doubtful now) but what would happen if the flight was delayed for five hours or more anyway on the day? Would I be able to claim for that or do you need to have checked in/be at the airport?

You would at the very least need to be checked in.  Which isn't actually a problem as you can check in online anyway with Ryanair.

The airline will know if you presented at the airport though, and indeed travelled, so you still won't get any compo even if it was delayed.

Ryan Air are going to be operating reduced capacity for the foreseeable future. Market demand could push prices higher.

I've had EU261 compensation without going to the airport or checking in for the delayed flight so it is possible, but I'd say it's unlikely in your case.

No harm in trying but I would not expect it.
