Returning to Work/Health Condition

I was informed yesterday that I would be due to return to work tomorrow however I have Bronchitis and had so for numerous years - I am currently waiting for my appointment with my consultant after a CT Scan/Blood Test as well as referral for a Cystic Fibrosis test (long story behind this).

I was contacted early May from work as they were asking if I have any medical conditions because of my 'cough' and whilst I could not get in touch with anyone but my Chest Physio at the time, he said that depending on how I feel I should be fine to return to work which I then told my work. However, after that I developed a chest infection (because I get these all the time, I am required to keep a course of antibiotics on standby) - I called my doctor today and she advised I not return to work yet which I then emailed my Manager and told him. I have not heard anything from him... do I go to work?

Please can someone advise me as to where I stand in terms of pay??? I am currently furloughed.
I am also slightly worried that my employer will think I'm milking it as I told them I was alright but am now saying I cannot come back to work :(

Thoughts/advice please?

You will need to speak to your employer. If they want to you to return to work then your furlough will end. If you're unable to work and you're entitled to SSP then you'll need a fit note from your GP to give to your employer. SSP is payable for 28 weeks, if entitled.

  • Technically you would only be entitled to sick pay, but speak with your employer and explain the situation.  Try phoning your manager rather than just relying on the email.  Get a letter from the Dr to back things up.

Your employer could re-furlough you, but obviously it's at their discretion.  They may anyway prefer to do that than pay sick pay.

Try not to worry too much, and best of luck.
