You would have thought that the first time poster would have popped back in here - just in case somebody was able to help her?
Never mind - if the transaction was cash paid in over the counter it could indeed be difficult to trace where the money came from - one reason why banks now insist that only the account holder pays cash into their account. I believe to 'help customers during the pandemic' sometimes this rule has been relaxed.

    But
     for the sum of thousands.
Surely any bank would query a cash deposit of this size ( and without benefit of personalised paying in slip) to an account in the name of another party?

Could be a money mule type scam. Have you given your bank account details to anyone who might be dodgy, for instance a job you applied for, a purchase you made, or written a cheque (which has your full bank details on)?
If it is you can expect them to contact you with some story like "sorry I accidently sent to the wrong account, can you return the money to me by Western Union (or similar) and you can keep 10% for your trouble". Under no circumstances do this - the money will have a dodgy source, eg a hacked account, and you'll be on the hook for the full amount. Report it to the bank.
