Oil needed over fence paint?

Hi
During lockdown I painted our fence and ended up using a cheap water based paint as everything branded was sold out. Looks good but someone mentioned that oil based is better than water based as it protects the fence in wet weather. Didn’t even consider this when buying the paint but obviously makes sense as oil repels water.
So should I buy some sort of clear wood oil to paint over the top of the fence paint to protect it from the rain?
