Change account name

Hi.  I’m getting married soon and my surname will change... I dread the nightmare this is going to cause when changing old surname on bank account to new surname.... I have some monthly direct debits going into the account.. so if I change my surname, will these recurring payments stop because they are assigned to my old name Or will they continue so long as sort code and account number is the same?

You don't need to do anything about incoming payments, they will continue as normal. Any new payments coming in should use your married name (well whatever name you have on the accunt when the payment is set up).

Old or existing direct  debits or payments in and out will be unaffected with a change of name.

Not true. You can not change it. Or "change it" in which case you can use either going on.

    Maybe look into it more.

You can't have direct debits coming into a personal current account. So whatever payment you receive aren't direct debits.

However,  all payments get directed to a sort code and account number. The name of the account holder doesn't matter. So a name change won't have any effect on incoming payments.

You should of course tell your bank if your surname changes. They will need to see your marriage certificate. It would probably also make sense if you informed everyone who pays you, just out of courtesy.

As Carrot says above you can always chose not to change it!
Many people seem to think its compulsory to change surname on marriage but it's not, it's just a custom.
My missis didn't change hers (so she's not, in the trad sense 'my' missis, she's still her own self and I'm mine, we just happen to be married), and so we never had any need to change details on accounts etc
It can, I admit, confuse people though - even in this day and age everyone 'expects' a woman to take a man's name. Dunno why myself.  And dunno why it never seems to be the other way round.

Word of warning- if you’re with NatWest they’re a nightmare. My account with them is still in my former name- they refused to change it because I don’t have any photo ID in my former name (because it’s now all in my new name) They actually said ‘you must continue using the account in that name’ to which I said no, I don’t- and switched my account to Barclays who were more than happy to change the name on my account upon me showing them my civil partnership certificate and debit card. Took five minutes and the new card arrived a few days later. I’m still trying to get rid of the NatWest account- I like to have two separate accounts for bills and spending with different banks and my new Metro account is up and running now so I just need rid of the NatWest one which isn’t proving easy either.

So you've changed your name by Deed poll 4 months ago and changed 4 of 5 bank accounts, now you're getting married and changing surname again.... ?

NatWest were my worst to deal with when I changed my name by DP, they wanted to see the original DP (not a certified copy) and I wasn't prepared to post it, but I don't work anywhere near a branch so couldn't just "pop in". I ran the account in my old name for about three months until I went on holiday, and made time when on holiday to drop into a branch (in the holiday town) and let them update it. I didn't have to worry about any regular payments in/out, no intervention necessary on those as they were set up by sort code and account number.
