Cancelling Fitness First gym membership while gym is closed

Can anyone suggest how I can cancel my gym membership with Fitness First? As well as temporarily closing my gym, they seem to have stopped dealing with the public through any means. My membership is out of any initial period so normally I'd need to give a month's notice but there's currently no obvious way to give them that notice. The location of the gym no longer works for me now that my working pattern has changed. I can obviously cancel my direct debit myself but get the feeling that might lead to legal hassle from them if it's done before they've received my notice.

You could in theory write them a letter outlining your one months notice from X date to end on Y date as per terms of the agreement. Then cancel your direct debit after your last payment (whether you pay for the month in advance, or pay for the month just used).

Whether they read that letter prior to your notice period finishing is irrelevant.
  • Have they temporally frozen your membership? If so that may be legally adequate* to allow them to only accept cancellations one they reopen.

*It also may not be, no one is quite sure at the moment.
