anyone know if Halifax / Santander / Post offices will still take old notes and pound coins right now?

Decimal in the last 20 years.

As far as I am aware the banks only accept the old round £1 coins - all other out of date coin would have to be sent to the Bank of England.

The BoE only accepts notes, not coins. You can always exchange notes by post with the BoE.

Coins are issued by the Royal Mint but accepting any “demonetised” coin is at the discretion of the high street  bank.

As far as I’m aware individuals can’t return them to the Royal Mint so if the bank won’t accept, try eBay.

Some banks do take in demonetised previously circulating coins as deposits - even £sd ones as a courtesy to their customers. The Royal Mint doesn't deal with private individuals but does with big institutions.
