Have I just ruined this sofa?

Either leather or pleather, I'm not sure! But whichever it is, my wee lad just peed over it, and in my haste I cleaned it with dettol. Now there's thin layer of something bobbling and peeling off it! Hopefully my picture has been attached. Is there anyway I can restore that?

I can't see a picture but in order to help we'll need to know what the sofa material is.
  • Hope this works.

If you don't know what material it is, I think the best you can do is wipe it down with some warm, mildly soapy water, dry it thoroughly then rub some leather balsam into it.  Unfortunately you may be stuck with a coloured stain.  There are staining products available but you may end up making it worse.

Have you got a cat or kitten? Only asking as that's what my pleather sofas look like.

I think what you are seeing may have been there before the little accident, only you are just noticing it now.

What you can do is put a bit of Vaseline (or copy version) on your finger, rub it over the bobbles then push them back down. Makes the less noticeable, sometimes completely hides them as they stick back down.

Are you on Facebook?  Search for 'Repair with care' who are furniture restorers who work miracles with leather furniture. They seem incredibly helpful people, I'm sure if you post on there they may be able to give you some advice.

  • It looks like someone has used a pencil and jabbed holes all over it. Or as someone suggested cat claws. I cannot see a stain

Looks like the leather's bonding/coating has been damaged - I did this once and never managed to fully resolve it but leather cleaner and restorer made it virtually invisible
  • I don't think it's a stain or a hole, the stuff that bobbling was literally coming off as I tried to rub the dettol off. It's hard to tell from a picture but I think it is some sort of coating that has come off as flashg67 suggests. What sort of cleaner/restorer would you recommend please?
