  • @alfmurph, it is hugely disrespectful, aswell as insulting, of your own son to let the fallout from his debts affect you, his parents, bailing him out this time means he'll think it acceptable to do the next time
Lessons need to be learnt (by him) and not these precedents set (by you).

Since you are so hell bent on signing the house over to him to avoid paying care fees, which means that the taxpayers will have to foot the bill for your care, I hope your son throws you out of the house that you have paid for, but is no longer yours - be very careful

I would also caution that, if you put your house in your son's name and he gets married, and then divorced, his spouse may well be entitled to half of your home.

The issue is more about setting a precedent.   What happens if another letter, that you haven't opened / not yet received, is for £1200?
If a company was to look at your sons credit report they will see a recently settled account in your sons name, based at your address so naturally assume that he still lives there and will naturally hound that address for payment.
Assuming on the off chance that this is just a one off and he forgot to pay it when he left the country then yeah, the £56 will make it go away, but if it's not you might have a problem.  There also might be an effect on your own credit report since it will be linked to your address.
It's not a case of being hard and saying "no", it's a life lesson that needs to be learned ... you'll never learn anything if you let someone else do the work.
