Stranded abroad, what happens next?

I was abandoned by TAP in Africa and my insurance company has been brilliant covering my accomodation costs. They have been clear this will only continue while I am trying to return.
At some point soon the airport will reopen but I have decided to stay until my job is available again, probably Sept.
At the point repatriation becomes available and I decline I fully expect my company to end their accommodation payments which is fully justified BUT am I liable to repay what they have covered so far? They have been paying the hotel directly
Thanks

If you couldn't get home then I would say no they can't recover the payments, but if you do stay longer they might investigate to make sure you didn't just choose to stay.

  • Thanks. I have been keeping them updated with my genuine attempts, and provided evidence. This change of heart is very recent and there have been no flights available since but talk is starting that flights may restart mid July.

You need to check if your insurance will cover you for any additional stay- they may be a limit  of days cover per trip.
They might not cover you for any time beyond the resumption of flights.

Also might not cover you if you get stranded again

I totally don't expect them to cover past the point I can return home. It is recovering past payments I am concerned about. I am sure they can't, as they are totally legitimate and verified by them. Just trying to double check.
I cannot praise Asda travel enough, the cap on accomodation payments was £1000 and yet they have kept me safe in lockdown since end of March

Don't forget to arrange at least medical insurance if you extend your stay.

Being nosey: Africa is a large continent, which country did you visit, Cabo Verde?

What about medical cover if you stay on, repatriation if you should need air ambulance home etc?
You need to ensure you are covered for that ,
The  policy may not be extended for that.

I am in Senegal now but was also in The Gambia
My policy is an annual one valid until December so I will double check if it will still continue.

Also check the limit on the duration of overseas travel, many are only 30 days per trip, a few offer more.
