The plain fact is the person you spoke to at Argos is wrong. The CCRs allow you to cancel and return the laptop for a refund. They can deduct an amount if your usage goes beyond what is "necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods" but in this case I don't believe they are entitled to do this if all you've done is switched on and had a quick demo of the laptop, assuming this is all you've done right?

Just reset the laptop and speak to them quoting the relevant piece of legislation from the CCRs. Also, next time try and do your research before buying, as an IT specialist one would've thought you had better knowledge than most as to what would be a suitable machine for your work.

Why don't you get some troubleshooting advice on how to fix the machine on the tech advice board? We'll probably have it sorted out for you.
I know Domestos kills 99% of germs, but I'm worried about the 1% that got away.

Genuine question - would you be happy paying full price for a laptop that’s been opened, set up and then returned?
Whilst that might be an interesting philosophical discussion it is not the point.

The OP was asking if he has the legal right to return the item for a refund. If he has, then what the shop do with it and how much of a loss it may cause them is not his problem.

Or even an Argos link to the laptop in question.

It's this one: https://www.argos.co.uk/product/7664920?clickSR=slp:term:macbook%20pro:1:28:1 (Can't set it as a link yet) I had actually asked several colleagues and peers for recommendations and this came highly recommended, I was a bit concerned about the 8GB of RAM but all of my research and asking colleagues said this would be fine for the tasks I had in mind, as it turns out it isn't and the machine is constantly sluggish, when checking the RAM usage it's constantly being fully utilised and using swap space which is obviously less than ideal and that's my only real complaint especially seeing as all my research led me to believe 8GB would be fine for my use cases. And before anyone states the obvious about it being a Mac I'm aware and this is done on purpose, the company I work with pretty much utilise them exclusively so I wanted to keep my environments consistent, I have my Windows PC for anything that needs a lot more grunt but that's obviously not portable with the case coming in at around 10kg alone, so I wanted something that was portable, light had a good battery life and would easily integrate into my day to day life when I was back at the office again as well as currently when I'm using Remote Desktop to work on my PC.

This is the first inclination we've had that this is an Apple device. One would think that it should be suitable for your needs ... Is it not feasible to increase the RAM? (The page says it can take up to 32GB. I've no idea how hard it is to upgrade a Macbook).

What sort of work are you doing that makes 8GB RAM to little and why don;t you simply upgrade it if it is too little?

Unfortunately they're not up-gradable at all outside of a whole new machine as the RAM and other components are soldered directly to the board which is where my predicament comes into play, if I could just upgrade it I would've happily just done so being no stranger to that world (And if I'm honest actually quite enjoying putting PCs together so it would've been a fun distraction haha!) but instead I'm just stuck with an item that's not fit for my purpose and never will be now.
