Can I go self employed and continue being furloughed by company i work for?

I am currently being furloughed by a company I work for. I am wondering if I get my own UTR number and start receiving money from my own self employment, would I still be furloughed by the company I am already being furloughed? My guess through common sense would be no, I would not recieve furlough from the company but I am hearing different things from different people and seeking for a good source for my answer. Thank you for your time.

There is no restriction on being furloughed and having a self employed business, unless your contract of employment says otherwise. It is not a problem for furlough, unless you own and run the company, and the self employment would be the same business.

It is as Jeremy said, but we would need more information on the details to make any further comment and add further value.

From what I understand, you wouldn't be able to do any "self employed" work for the company that has furloughed you, and you would need to be doing your self employed work outwith you furloughed hours (So, if your job is 9 - 5, you technically wouldn't be able to do self employed work within those hours) ... how they would check that though, I don't know.

The first statement is correct, but would be unlikely to happen outside the context I gave of working for your own company. The second (working hours) may well be a term of the contract of employment, but has nothing to do with the rules for CJRS.
  • Thanks for the comments guys really helped! It is minimum part time hours for the company I am working for and the type of work I will be doing will not be the same field of work. The company is a sports camp an events company and the self employed work will be in the building industry (If the work presents itself). I just wanted to know whether my furlough would continue alongside my own self employment work or would the furlough end once I start either earning more money than i do for the company im being furloughed by. Thanks for your help guys, first time using this website it's an amazing tool!

Yes it will continue, unless your contract of employment states otherwise.
