Appliance / white goods insurance

Options
I have been contacted by phone by two companies offering me appliance insurance (washing machine, freezer etc). Wear and tear breakdown is not covered by my contents policy. Rather than accept one of these offers on impulse is there somewhere that I can go to see what is good value for money cover for such circumstances?

It's doubtful that any of them is good value for money, on average you'd be better off just covering the costs yourself if and when they arise (and making use of statutory rights and manufacturers' guarantees where appropriate).

You are probably right from a pure LSD point of view.  The other dimension is the facility, one hopes, to call out an engineer at short notice to repair the fault, if feasible, prior to claiming for a replacement. I can understand there being a premium for this but it is a question of judging if what someone offers you over the phone is competitive - and if not where to look elsewhere!

You can always call someone out to fix something, they're hardly going to rush out any faster if they've already got your money.

"Always"?  This would be a matter that would have to be tied down in the contract rather than - as seems to be the popular approach these days - sign first and look at the small print (in the form of the policy confirmation) afterwards. There may of course be reputable home contents policies that have such cover built in but I have yet to find one.
