Can EON Smart Meters be taken over by new suppliers?
Hello
I don't have a Smart Meter but am getting lots of requests from my current supplier EON to have one fitted. They say they are fitting the latest SMETS2 meter which can be switched over if I change supplier, but I wonder if this is true and actually happens in reality?
Does anyone have any experience of switching supplier, where the new supplier has been able to fully take over an existing smart meter?
Thanks
Robin

That's the eventual aim, but it appears for some people even if they return to the supplier who originally fitted the smart meter they can't or wont always re-instate the smart functionality.
My guess is that until all suppliers are fully geared up with the DCC and have the processes in place that can seamlessly interchange data between themselves the DCC and each other then it's still going to be a long time (several years is my estimation) before it becomes routine. I'd suggest that the last three months would have added another 3-6 months to the timescales as well.
So I wouldn't hold your breath or lose sleep over it, nor let it prevent you from taking on a decent tariff - let them do the worrying. You can still read a smart meter manually and send in the readings so it's not going to be the end of the world if they can'tNever under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers2 -
Read the Rogue meters thread. If you get smart meters installed check and photograph the meter readings at installation time. Read the meters regularly so you can see if your consumption apparently varies from normal.2

Thanks for your replies.
EON would like to install a smart meter, but my fixed tariff with them ends in November, and looking at their current deals I will probably be switching to a new supplier at that time. So it's probably best to keep my old meters for the time being, rather than end up with a new Smart Meter that doesn't work properly.

Your new smart meter should continue to work if it's SMETS2. But, if it doesn't, it will still work in dumb mode, so what have you lost?No free lunch, and no free laptop1

Worked fine for me.
EON fitted new gas and electricity smart meters for me last November and they were SMETS2.
Switched to Octopus last week and all is trouble-free:
- In-home display updated with new tariff info by the end of the switch date.
- Half hourly consumption history is showing up in my Octopus online account.0 -
There you go then - get a decent supplier and swap to another who has it all sorted and thats how it should work but I guess that it will still be a year or so before it becomes the norm (cynical I know, but)Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers2

I had smets2 meters installed by E.ON last December and have just moved to EDF a few days ago. They continue to work in full smart mode with EDF and the IHD has been updated to EDF's tariffs. I suspect for every person who complains on MSE that their smets2 meters aren't working in smart mode after a change of supplier, there's many people like myself & MartinHere who have had no such issues. People usually post on the MSE Energy section to complain1

The suppliers are incentivised to get totally new installations but not to sort out existing non working ones.
Also the cheapest deals are generally from small Cos. who are avoiding doing any installations at all!!2 -
@brewerdave
I got a good deal from EDF for my gas, only 2.05p kWh with a daily standing charge of around 18p. Electric is 14.10 p kWh so nothing special about that but our gas bills are way higher than electric so we will save quite a bit with that EDF dual fuel tariff (called June v21 Exclusive or summat).
