I think this mus be brain fade as I am sure I have had this before!  Please reboot my brain!! :/

Acer laptop with no internal dvd writer. using teac dv 28s y usb writer. writer works in other  PC fully (also usb under win 10).
A written disc works fine, seen by windows explorer etc.Trying to write to same format blank dvd for backup purposes. Explorer, Windows Media Player and Macrium Reflect do not see the drive (with blank disc) as a selectable storage location for writing. Result cannot write to it.

Device manager no errors. System Information reports Dvd writer as drive D (for both written and blank discs when in use)
win ver  Home 10.0 18362
Same usb connector work fine with external hard drive.
>:)

Can somebody help so I can write to the blank disc.
(Could share files in the short term and write from my Dell PC but that does not solve the problem when the laptop is stand alone)

  • Have you tried Settings/Devices/Autoplay/Choose auto-play defaults?

..errr. nope. Will have a look thanks........
Can you suggest which one should be of use?
Currently "Open Folder to View files" which is fine for read ps
Other options for removable drive are:
    Take no action
    Ask
    Configure Storage Setting
    ?

  • I’m not absolutely sure to be quite honest as it’s so long since I’ve used this setting.
Perhaps try “ask” to see if that sparks up your laptop recognising the external drive. If so, then it should be straightforward to write to the drive as you normally would.

Have you tried writing the DVD using third-party software such as DeepBurner?
(I've used the free version of DeepBurner for years -- it's very simple and reliable).

Well downloaded and installed. Deepburner free.
slightly different but still no burning!
selected burn, source file, destination non.
selected erase and dvd writer seen (but could not erase as expected - blank dvd in writer so no surprise)
selected burn again, writer now selected in destination list (same source selected) but cannot still burn - write speed greyed not selectable as is main window options to "ok" the burn or cancel, so would appear that something  still amiss!

will try on my main pc using my normal burner AVS4U but no great hopes!!

    Conclusion:
First thought was the correct one! Brain fade. :o
Attached it to PC USB rather than laptop where I have AVS Disc Creator which is my usual burning software and very good. Never had an issue with it.
Same results for File  Explorer etc. on PC but AVS showing writer with blank disc. It has a Disc info section which shows up the drive capabilities.
That triggered my brain and it showed I was trying to write to an unsupported format optical disc! DOH!!!
I remembered then, that particular DVD writer was very cheap and primarily is a reader (bought cos it was cheap but included DVD ROM format) and hardly writes to any formats - just about 3 dvd formats [dvd+rw and 2 layer +/-R.

Real pita that Windows will not give up that same drive info. Cannot see a reason why not if AVS4YOU can do it (though it was a bought for app in a whole suite - but then so is Win 10)

Thanks for the help along the way.............
