It might be controversial but I do think that the 2D side scrolling platformer games were alot better for kids than many games around today. The level designers were masters of the craft in terms of progression of difficulty through-out the games. I think that has been lost in today's gaming world. Particularly amongst the "games" available on tablets. To me they resemble mindless arcade games.

Does anyone here still play any retro computers/consoles? I've just found my old SNES and have been thrown back to the early 90s, it still works with no issues!
My young daughters are loving Super Mario World, games for kids really were better back then.
Retro gaming handhelds and boxes are amazing

When it comes to tablets that is largely because the touch screen controls are laggy and imprecise compared to a controller, which is imprecise compared to a keyboard and mouse. The differences are only microseconds, however that does make quite a big difference. An average player on KBM will be able to beat good players using a controller and anyone using touch controls will barely stand a chance in competitive play.

Depending on the game and the child's age 2D side strollers can be easier for children as they are only having to navigate in two dimensions rather than three and the mechanics of the games are usually simpler. However there are some great 3D games which children can pick up when played on easy and then up the difficulty to normal once they have learned the mechanics and dexterity.
