It might be controversial but I do think that the 2D side scrolling platformer games were alot better for kids than many games around today. The level designers were masters of the craft in terms of progression of difficulty through-out the games. I think that has been lost in today's gaming world. Particularly amongst the "games" available on tablets. To me they resemble mindless arcade games.

Depending on the game and the child's age 2D side strollers can be easier for children as they are only having to navigate in two dimensions rather than three and the mechanics of the games are usually simpler. However there are some great 3D games which children can pick up when played on easy and then up the difficulty to normal once they have learned the mechanics and dexterity.0 -

A friend has a SNES an N64 and a classic PlayStation. The days we go round his and have a retro gaming day are brilliant0
