Car insurance advice

Options
My car was written off in April last year. As with most insurers I had to keep paying the rest of my policy, but it was only until June. I've just found out that my insurer automatically renewed the policy, even though the car was a right off, and over the past year I've paid over £1000 towards it. Not only that, the final £200 they haven't been able to claim and have sent it to a debt collecting agency. Is this a common thing? What should I do? Any and all help appreciated

If they renewed the policy they must have sent a new insurance certificate for the vehicle, so why did you not contact them straight away to cancel the insurance?

Your policy was the same as the majority, set up for auto renew which you agreed to at the time.

Before your policy ended last June, you should have been sent a renewal quotation. And after it ended a renewed policy along with a new certificate?

Are you saying you did not receive either and continued to pay by a DD for a whole year without noticing?

Contact the insurance company and explain the situation, that the car they were insuring was in fact the one they had written off.

Ask for your payments back and ask them to stop the debt collection process.
