Home working tax rebate

I have been told by my employer that I am not eligible for the £6 tax concession while I am working from home. Because I am no longer commuting I am saving money anyway. Is this relevant?

Nope. Your employer thinks they know it all. Just do it yourself online.

You not commuting and saving that money is irrelevant, but the payment is also discretionary.

The £6 per week is not the tax rebate, that is an allowable expense which is tax free, so you could claim it if allowed by your employer and it would not attract taxation as income. Whether they agree to pay that is at their discretion.

If they do not pay you the £6 pw then you can claim tax releif, which works out at £1.20 pw for basic rate taxpayers or £2.40 for higher rate payers, however it does involve submitting a Self-assessment tax return, which you may not want to do if you do not already. You could also complete the P87 form (details in the MSE guide), at the end of the tax year.

Hardly worth going to the bother of filling in forms to get £1.20 a week back, a lot of people got rather giddy about getting £6 a week when all this started, the reality is rather different.

For £62.40 a year in my pocket, I'd fill in the form  :D

I doubt most people would be at home that long.

and technically, its £4pw pre 5th April 2020.
For some, the admin burden will outweigh the small tax saving, for others it would be worth it.
