I could turn the heating off, but that defies the point of having a bundle of programmable thermostats all individually programmed with the temperature profile that we consider comfortable.  If the bedrooms have dropped below the night time temperature I've configured, I want the heating to kick in just to bring it back up again.  If I wasn't bothered and didn't mind being cooler, I'd set them lower???  I don't get this antiquated British mentality of "it's June so the heating must be off and we'll just have to freeze". It's insane.

We're in a rented place so I don't want to invest too much of my own cash improving things.  The one feature that I would add were it our place would be door sensors to lock out the underfloor heating thermostats if the patio or bi-fold doors are open.  I do have to manually put them to standby if we have the doors open into the evening as the temperature drops.

By all means you are free to put your heating on as and when you choose. I was just querying if it was really necessary. After all you have come on here asking why your energy consumption is so high. Don't shoot the messanger!

Starting to wonder if I've either submitted a reading incorrectly today or previously as this doesn't seem right at all...

Just to rule out possible imperial vs metric confusion, could you just check any recent gas bill and post the number of units consumed and the kWh they have calculated based on that...

I'm going to check this when the bill generates. My meter reading last night has not generated a bill yet - but I'm waiting to eye it over to ensure my consumption has not been incorrectly billed. It could well have been the calculator I used online that was incorrect and potentially used imperial instead of metric as it's default setting and not BG's error.

18,945 Kwh of gas used over 243 days in a small house is HUGE
It is a Metric meter so check it's being billed as such  -  On the bill divide the number of Kwh charged by the meter units used, the answer should be around 11.2 - If it's around 31.5 you are being billed for an Imperial meter and seriously overcharged, so get onto BG
Thanks for the heads up. I'm going to do another reading tonight. But my suspicion is it's my error. It definitely doesnt seem right as someone else said they average 6000 kWh for a 3 bed new build. So I suspect the units I inputted into the online calculator may have been automatically interpreted as imperial instead of metric. Will do another reading tonight and see if it was my error. Struggling to get through to BG atm. No live chat availability and every time I call after work the phone lines are closed. Only option is to text them so may have to go that route if there is an error. Pretty surprising they still dont have basic customer services running even at this point.

WOMP WOMP WOMP - MY ERROR. Just did a calculation with an old bill. The 18000 units I posted originally was my error calculator must have been set to imperial - BG's bill is correctly charging me for metric.  My actual usage is currently at 6712.07kWh in 232 days. Not 18000+. Apologies everyone - as I'm sure you can tell by now.. energy, maths general common sense is not my strong suit..

I'm going to keep on with daily readings. We seem to have got rid of the huge debit very suddenly somehow - so with daily meter readings that should give BG an opportunity to spot any problems there might be. We are actually in credit somehow now which is a weight off my mind but I'm cautious this could be a mistake. I'm hopeful we can get this sorted and all money paid appropriately come August and leave BG for a cheaper company.

You've been in the house for nearly 8 months - so you should have lots of bills in your on line account. Just download one and look at the meter details.
One possible error is that you are reading the meter incorrectly - on modern meters watch out for the decimal point.
Post us the reading you used

Hi Robin - I checked an old bill - the bill is correct - the online calculator I used i think was incorrectly interpreting my readings as imperial.

211 and 2355.56 kWh between January and March. So I think that is right as dividing 2355.56 by 211 is 11.17.

Sounds right and 2355 kWh is typical - where is the 18995 figure coming from ?
