Chargeback and Ryanair

At the start of April, Ryanair cancelled our flights due to occur in August and although they said that we could have a refund, they have not been forthcoming despite our application for it. Our travel insurance company told us to go to our credit card company and in turn, they told me to contact the airline and then the travel insurance company! We are going around in circles! When I contacted the credit card company to apply for a chargeback, I was told that I couldn’t apply yet as the flights were booked for August and August hasn’t happened. However, I read that you only have 120 days from when you paid for the goods to apply for chargeback. We paid for the flights in March and by the time August arrives it will be more than 120 days.  Does anyone have any further information on this to assist and what we should do/ who we should contact next? Many thanks. Rachel

Chargeback is either date of purchase (March) or start date of service (August)
If you have a cancellation notification then you shouldn't have to wait until August, try your card company again and hopefully you will get someone who knows the rules.

  • Can anyone help? Our Ryanair flights were cancelled by them in March and I was eventually refunded using my bank chargeback scheme and now Ryanair have taken the money back stating it is 'disputed'  Can anyone advise me what to do next?

    Nothing about the chargeback .

Is always a possibility with chargeback as the retailer can , as in this case, successfully appeal the decision and get their money back. If Ryanair can prove that you have a pending refund and they are dealing with it then chargeback is very likely to fail.

  • Thank you for explaining this. Do you think most of the chargebacks will be taken back then?  This is such a disgrace - unbelievable!

You have a right to know why it's been taken back,  so ask for the evidence the Ryanair supplied.  If they refuse then raise a complaint. If you are still unhappy you can go to the Ombudsman,  but not a court.

This must be Ryanair’s get out with chargeback.
They ask you if you want a refund when they cancel the flight, you say yes and get a confirmation onscreen to say that you are being refunded. Then they send you an email weeks later telling you of the ‘benefits’ of a voucher instead of the refund you have asked for and that they agreed to. You then have to ask again for the refund via their stupid message chat system that takes 2 hours upwards to get an agent deal with you to process the refund, which in the voucher email they are claiming will take months to process.
If you use chargeback they say they have started the refund which technically they have on their terms and with moving the goalposts.
The airline where basic customer service is a futile aspiration!

The only 'customer service' they know is plonking your backside on a seat and moving you from A to B. That's really it. As soon as they have your cash, you're theirs.

I think that about sums it up!    Be careful of the meaning between the lines!    My daughter (I would say without asking any advice from me or anyone else who is trying to keep up with it all)  received an email cancelling the 'return' leg of her flight to Tenerife but not the outward one (12 July)   The email said she would need to request a refund so again despite me trying to drum in to her to wait until her agents contact her.   She happily went ahead to click 'refund'.    But she didn't notice that this also cancelled the outbound flight which if you are still following, was still scheduled to go ahead!

I then said well you have now technically cancelled a flight of your volition.  She then phoned Ryanair (amazingly managed to get through pretty quickly) and crying told them she didn't mean to cancel the outgoing flight but got confused by the instructions and they did agree to give her vouchers, which she was more than grateful to accept!    Obviously no chance now of her getting a refund I would say (if anyone knows differently please say)

I was suspicious that this was yet another 'devious' way to get people to accept vouchers?   No?  Could be wrong but I would urge people to stop and think and read everything carefully.   You won't lose your money by mulling over your options and understanding it more clearly.   Sorry...a bit of a rant!

What is the Ombudsman we could use? Thanks.
