I was looking at this Dell refurb. Thoughts? OK? Better value options out there? Edit: Just noticed that the £695 price was ex-VAT ... £834 once VAT is added so more than I was looking to pay.
    (£695 - 10%) + 20% VAT = £750.60

Can you show me how you're finding -10%? ... that doesn't show for me. I can see the Father's Day 10% discount but it doesn't get applied when I go to the checkout. There's an option to apply a coupon code but there's no code defined for the Father's Day 10% that I can see. I tried code DOFDI10 but that doesn't work for that laptop as it's for Inspiron models which this one isn't.

Could be wrong but does the 10% discount not just apply to "selected" products?
Just a further observation whilst visiting this thread, my business office which had anything up to 40 Dell laptops/desktops at a time, were convinced that the laptops had a 4 year built in obsolesence on hard drives based on the experience of failures occurring shortly after the warranty period had expired. Not that it put us off continuing to buy from Dell as they were good while they lasted.

I wouldn't buy a laptop with a HDD these days. Or if I did I would quickly replace it with my SSD from my old laptop. My current work Dell laptop (that I'm using at the moment) is a Precision 7540 with a 512GB M.2 SSD.

Not that I am recommending the laptop. Only illustrating that you may have the option of a 10% discount.

Thanks for the link. What's wrong with that laptop in your opinion? What recommendation would you make based on my OP? (Not necessarily from Dell).

(The last time I was PC buying was January 2013 so I'm somewhat out of the loop now on the best deals).

Just seems a bit much for what it offers.
Have you thought of simply having the Motherboard replaced if you think the fault lies there?

Two ideas which might be of interest.
1). Our local PC repair shop (small family business) often rebuild/refurbish laptops and sell on at very reasonable prices. The advantage is that if you have any problems, they will always support under warranty. You may well have this sort of facility nearby which might be recommended by people in your community?
2). And I'm not selling here, but I have purchased many computer components for myself from Novatech over the years normally by telephone order, but also by visiting the shop in Portsmouth when I was down in that neck of the woods (mainly channel ferry arrivals/departures). They have a small number of laptops in the clearance section circa £600ish. Their Trustpilot ratings appear 5 star and genuine (as far as you can ever make that statement reasonably about Trustpilot ratings).
As I say, just a couple of thoughts!

Thanks for the reminder about Novatech. I took a look and I don't think their lower-priced units (even in Clearance) will meet my requirements.
  • One more thing which might be useful. Just had an email from Amex this evening which is offering a £100 incentive if you spend more than £750 on a Dell computer. Its available to the first 100,000 card members who save the offer to their account.
So if you have an Amex card, could be a £100 saving on purchase price!
