Travel insurance refund

I took out holiday insurance with a company called World Direct for my dad.  We were due to travel on 3rd July 2020 for two cruise, which P&O cancelled due to the corona virus pandemic.  I phoned them to see if I could obtain a full refund, only to be told they would only pay back 50% of the policy value.  I went on to say we had rebooked the same holiday for same time in July 2021.
Only to be told that because it was a year away, they would charge me another 10% per cent per month on top of what was already paid.  What a con.  Any suggestions please.
Thank you, Trudy

Don't forget that the insurance company incurred costs in setting up the policy and were also providing cover for cancellation from the date the policy was taken out.
Due to the high number of claims this year, I wouldn't be surprised if all travel insurance will cost a fair bit more in the coming years.

Well you can always take the 50% back ,its may be better than nothing ,i cannot see the company giving you back 100% as they have had overheads etc.
