Seems more hassle than it's worth without it.

"You may be able to tax this vehicle at a Post Office Branch that deals with vehicle tax without the V5C registration certificate"
I looked on this link but I could not find this statement anywhere, I am not sure what in trade" means?
We are going to ask for our deposit back.
"In trade" means that the last known registered keeper signed the car over to a trader using the yellow V5C/3 slip.

DVLA make a note that they're no longer responsible for it, but do not assign a new keeper until the car is actually sold. In effect, the car is in limbo, and doesn't need to be taxed or SORNed, but can't be used without trade plates.

It seems it should be possible to tax it and register it in your name with a V62 if the vehicle is currently "in trade".  Check the reg here https://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/ and if there is this statement "You may be able to tax this vehicle at a Post Office Branch that deals with vehicle tax without the V5C registration certificate" they should be able to do it providing the member of staff at the PO is sufficiently trained.

Yes the key point is it needs to be 'in trade'. If it isn't then trying to tax it at a PO with a V62 won't work. We found this to our cost at work after buying an ex-NHS Transit with no V5C shortly before lockdown started. Without a V5C, and with the DVLA currently not accepting postal applications we literally have no way of taxing the vehicle currently.

Thank you all. I think I dodged a bullet here. Next time I will definitely ask about the V5 before driving miles for a test drive.

And next time ask to see all the paperwork before handing over a deposit.
