As if it makes any difference whether the milk goes in first or last!
  • Yes because the water needs to be boiling to brew the tea properly.

But if you've made the tea 'properly' in a teapot, how can it make a difference whether the milk is put in the cup before or after the tea is poured?

I use one of these - makes perfect tea every time. Expensive at £200, but can be programmed to make the tea for a given time, very adjustable, and the tea can't stew because the leaves are removed once it's made:

I'm a milk in first person (no loose tea just bags and mugs)
I can taste the difference when it's added afterwards and to me, it's not as nice

I can perhaps see that, but that's a horrendous way to make tea!

     One mug.
    One tea bag.
    Boiling water.
    No milk.
    Job done.

  • China teapot, 2 good spoons of leaf tea, boiling water and brew 5 minutes.  Milk in first and a mug! followed by another one in quick succession.  Take twice a day as prescribed and life is much better afterwards.

The reason they used to put milk in the teacup first was because they used to use delicate bone china teacups.  The milk went in first to reduce the risk of the teacup / the glaze cracking when the hot tea was added.  So as the middle and lower classes started emulating what the aristocracy/upper classes were doing they followed the same rountine without question even though it wasnt necessary as they were more likely to be using porcelain or even earthenware cups/mugs.
