Car insurance add ons

Options
Hello all, looking for some friendly advice re: car insurance. I'm sure there a numerous threads and info pages with similar content but would really appreciate if someone could take the time to clarify this in simple terms please, I'm confused by this every year when renewal rolls around :s

Im comparing car insurance and can't get my head around a few of the optional add ons. Typically there is the option to add on one or all of the following to your quote: no claims discount protection, motor legal protection, personal accident cover, courtesy car, and breakdown cover.  I know many insurers have some of these included in their policies and I know that insurers will vary their specifics but in broad terms can someone please explain no claims discount protection, motor legal protection, and personal accident cover, and whether they are a valuable addition to car insurance or not worth the money?

Thank-you  o:)

Ncd you can protect your no claims and your ncd is based on how many years of ncd you have which gives you a discount from an insurer. If you dont make a claim for say 5 years you have 5 years no claims.

Motor legal protection if you need to use legal services eg your involved in an accident or maybe your car is stolen.

Personal accident cover if your injured you can make use of this option, at a guess it would be slmething you could make use of if you couldn't work.

I protect my no claims bonus, dont have the accident cover nor the legal protection.
I could be wrong but Im sure its been covered before on here that you could buy your own motor legal protection policy
Im sure Google would add some more info.

Breakdown cover you can get independently for cheaper most of the time so worth comparing.

Not really. Most "personal injury" cover that comes with car insurance policies is of an extremely basic sort. It will pay out a small amount for certain serious injuries, for example £5000 if you are permanently paralysed, £1000 if you lose a limb, nothing for a broken leg (even if it means that you are off work for several months). Its sole purpose is to allow the insurer to include the words "personal injury cover" in its advertising. It's not generally worth paying extra for.

If you want to be protected in the event that you can't work you need a standalone income protection policy (ie permanent health insurance) which will cover you if you cannot work through illness or injury, whatever the cause.
  • Thanks for responses, sorted the car insurance for this year.  From what it seems breakdown cover is cheaper bought separately and courtesy car cover is extravagantly overpriced upgrade from standard courtesy car cover included. No claims discount seems worth it for the cost.  I've skipped on personal injury cover as my work has comprehensive sick leave policy and I have income protection with life insurance. Still not sure about motor legal protection but decided to opt to it for the additional £25 but if anyone could shed more light on this for next time that'd be greatly appreciated.
