Refund paid to expired debit card to old bank after switch

Holiday company insisted on refunding my balance of £4973 to my old debit card That I’d used to pay balance. I switched banks on March 31st from Santander to 1st Direct. Santander debit card expired 04/20 and refund processed on June 4th. Holiday firm Just You /G Touring insist payment processed but not getting anywhere with Santander or 1st direct. The holiday company paid back my deposit (£25) by bacs , into my new account on 4th June. Have requested ARN from holiday company but not forthcoming. Please can you advise as I need my money back.

Well the funds will have gone to Santander. Expired card means nothing as refunds do not require authorisation. That should then have been moved over to FD.
Sadly not much you can do, other than waiting for the ARN to give to Santander. At least they will be able to see the payment and find it in their system.

Its probably policy to pay refunds back to the cards that were used to make them.  If your card has expired/cancelled/been eaten or whatever and you've had a new card refunds find their way back to you then.  So its probably safe to say if you've moved account the original card will have been cancelled, the original account goes to CASS (asssuming you did it via CASS that is), the refund is made, lands in your old account, computer says "this money needs to go over there", it gets moved, you receive it.

Not entirely sure what happens if you didn't do CASS, presume it would sit in a holding account somewhere awaiting to be claimed and you get a cheque from Santander that you can pay in yourself?  Although 1st Direct does subscribe to CASS, so don't see why you wouldn't have done it that way
  • This happened to me a little while ago. If you contact Santander the money will be sat in either a sundry account or potentially still in the account associated with your credit card. Even though technically this account is 'shut' to you, they will still keep it open for this exact situation. Call them up and ask them to transfer the funds to your chosen bank account
