Day and night rates/meters
Hi everyone, hopefully someone can answer this and forgive my ignorance!
i have recently moved into a new property and I now have two electric meters, one has only day rates and the other has both, the company I am with Octopus Energy seem to only be charging night rates on the meter that has both. This morning (Sunday) I have been keeping a close eye on the readings and despite being told by my supplier that only night rates will be charged from 12am to 11:59pm on a Sunday both meters are steadily changing, in the last 5 hours both meters have changed by 5 units each, the meter with both day and night is slightly slower at changing than the other meter.
My question is if it is purely on night rate should both meters be changing? And between 12-7am on a weeknight I should be on night rate, should both be changing at this time also?

I’m concerned I’m being overcharged, hopefully not but my first monthly bill from Octopus for this property was £180 which is a lot higher than my last property.
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum.12am to 11:59pm is just a minute short of 24 hours...What is the name of your tariff? I trust you've registered with Octopus and aren't on an expensive Deemed Contract? What are the prices per kWh and the standing charge?0
-
Yes I thought it was strange to be all day however Octopus have said “all day Sunday”, I’ve emailed them for clarification regardless0

Hopefully this explains

If you don't have gas and you're on a legacy tariff such as THTC, Comfort Plus, Redring, Economy 10 etc it can be very expensive and problematic to change suppliers, as a search of this forum using those terms will show. This maybe why Octopus was the supplier you inherited. If you rent, your options may be limited; see this thread and the associated blog.0

I do rent however I didn’t inherit Octopus energy, I moved them with me to the new property.
Do you know if the day rate meter should be changing during night rate hours at all?0 -
Those rates don't look great, especially as they don't include VAT.What is your space and water heating, e.g. storage radiators and immersion heater(s)?You need switch off all the supplies at the meters, then turn the meters on one at a time and check every device to identify to which supply it's connected. Knowledge is power !Make sure any Boost immersion heater switch is left permanently off.Next time you move, make sure the property has gas.0

You could still be on their Deemed Contract but not paying them ! Find out who is your DNO, then go to their website and find out who is really supplying you at the moment.I trust you did read the meters yourself the moment you moved in, and that you're sending monthly readings?0

Since we’ve had our bill we have turned off the water boost and only ‘boost’ it for an hour each day, see picture. My DNO is Scottish and Southern, I’ll contact them in due course to make sure everything is in order however o believe the landlord has taken care of that as the account with them is in his name.
We have thermal heaters in the house which we’ve now stopped using for now anyway.
And yes the readings Octopus have are my own taken the minute I walked through the door on day 1.0 -

At your old property you read the meters when you leave (take a photo) and give them to you supplier and they send you a final bill.
At rnew property you read the meters and give them to the existing supplier. You become their customer for a few weeks until you swop suppliers. However as you appear to have one of the legacy tariffs - disaster awaits with Octopus trying to make it fit their structure..
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill1 -
Hi Robin,Thanks for your input, I did have a discussion with the landlord when we moved in who said he would liaise with the previous supplier as they hadn’t told us who this was! I’ll be sure to contact them tomorrow to make sure all is well.
I did give Octopus an exit reading for the old property and an entry reading for the New property which conflicted with the previous suppliers exit readings initially however that was all cleared up using the photos I took and Octopus have confirmed this. All in we were with the old supplier for 5 days in which we were not in the new property and all electrics were turned off at switch board.0
