At the moment I am with shell energy contract ends in July 2020. I have to
provide them with a meter reading every month. The smart meter I have
is a smet1 ( British Gas ) which is now dead it used show the meter
readings on the remote control but not anymore.
i have to use steps to get my meter readings and it’s a real pain now.
Meter is just below. My ceiling.
I Have done a search for a new deal and E,ON is offering a better deal
than shell, but they are saying a smart meter to be fitted.
Would they replace my meter with a smet 2 or am I stuck with an
Old smet1.

Last I looked into this the plan was for all SMETS1 meters to receive a firmware upgrade to make them SMETS2 compliant.  So you may not get a new meter unless there is an issue that prevents the meter from being upgraded, and in that case a replacement should be rearranged.  However the current deadline is June next year, which may be pushed back slightly further due to COVID-19, so to answer the question:  Probably not since you already have a smart meter.

If you qualify for the Priority Services Register you may be able to get your meter read for you.

Even if a SMETS1 meter gets enrolled onto the DCC to allow remote reading functionality it won'y necessarily make the IHD work again
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers
  • My experience of this is that I have Landis & Gyr meters fitted by Brit gas. They have been dumb since switching supplier, but the IHD did still work - the £ figures were obviously wrong but you could get a meter reading. However in Dec 2019 first the gas then the electricity figures disappeared and soon after it stopped working completely- the display saying "connecting to smart meter"
Someone must have communicated with the meter to make this change. Latest date I have seen is 26 July 2020 to migrate to DCC system.

I've just had my smets1 swapped for smets2 with EON, due to signing up for a tariff that required a smart meter be fitted.

(I emailed to check a smets 2 would be fitted, or it would have been a waste of everyone's time.)

I'm surprised that they have done a "smart" meter swap. Not sure whether they can count the SMETS 2 install towards their smart metering targets and the EON reps.on these forums have constantly pushed the "SMETS1 upgrade is coming soon" message . :)

I had this with e.on. The had originally fitted the SMET1 and i moved suppliers a couple of times then back e.on, who insisted they fitted new SMET2 as part of the contact. I did say I thought it was a waste of money but they fitted it anyway and manged to mess it all up. I guess it does count towards their targets
