Seeking money back from cancelled Car Insurance

Need some Advice. A few years ago, Daughters boyfriend at the time, took her car out without her knowledge and to cut a long story short, crashed it. The insurance subsequently cancelled her insurance. A few weeks later, they called asking permission to use her monies to pay the council for damages. At this point, she refused, and said the person involved was being fined through the courts,so not paying twice. The insurance said, that they would then need proof the fine had been paid in full before releasing any money.
When the fine had been paid in full, she contacted them and they said "The Council came to us for damages relating to the civil aspect of the case, which we paid them out of your policy. If you can provide us with evidence the fine was for councils damage, we will look at your case again?"
How can my daughter find out what the fine was meant to have covered?
TIA

The fine is a penalty and has nothing to do with covering any damages. It goes to the court/government. Insurance covers damages. With the policy being cancelled just be glad the insurance company are not coming after your daughter for their outlay.1

The OP says the car was taken without permission i.e. stolen, so I don't understand how the insurer can come after the daughter for anything.tberry6686 said:The fine is a penalty and has nothing to do with covering any damages. The fine would be for the ex boyfriend taking the car "without the owners permission"? and any subsequent charges.
Nothing to do with damage to council property, that would be for insurance to pay out on.
You can seek money back for your daughters cancelled insurance, just be prepared for a huge bill from insurance company.

Depends what the fine was for. If the daughter did not report the car stolen then the insurance company would (probably) assume permission was given.TELLIT01 said:

Exactly but OP seems to think they can seek money back?davidmcn said:
I'm surprised there's any refund coming back, normally you don't if there's been a claim.Hasbeen said:You can seek money back for your daughters cancelled insurance, just be prepared for a huge bill from insurance company. The world is not ruined by the wickedness of the wicked, but by the weakness of the good.
