Long forgotten account

Several years back now, and because I'm an idiot, lazy and was told "Don't get excited. Its probably not much" I got told by my mum that I think it was either Lloyds or Halix sent a letter saying I had a old account from the 80s that hadn't been used, where we aware.
Thinking about it now, if they'd sent the letter, surely they have details? I did at least visit the local branch when told and asked them. They had no clue, said I'd have to write in. And thats where I gave up the hassle. I have a faint memory, in the 80s of having some of the Halifax money box things they used to give out. I'm sure, it will end up only being £5 if even that.
Anyway. We got told about this probably about 9 years ago and again being the idiot and lazy person I am, I haven't bothered to chase.
The long winded question is, if the account goes unclaimed for so long, does Halifax, Lloyds or whoever close the account and give the money in it to the government?

The money never goes to the government but it might go to charity. You can reclaim it whenever you like, even if it has been given to charity.
