Mortage unemployment insurance

I have been paying a mortgage  unemployment insurance for 17yr,I took it out buying my home , I was adviced to have it as I am self employed ,so when I had to stop work because of covid-19, I thought great, mortgage will be covered and a little bit left over to live on, 12wks later and I'm getting no where, they want a letter from HMRC to say I've ceased trading, told then I'm only temporarily ceased, does this mean I wont get payment? Should I turn to the ombudsman or seek legal advice?

What does your policy state you are covered for?
What does your policy state you need to make a claim?
If you are self employed are you eligible for something like a Local Authority grant or a Bounceback loan?

My insurance is for accident, sickness and unemployment,  they want notification from HMRC that I have ceased trading, which I cant get as I'm only temporarily ceased trading, I've got the little help provided buy government, which I'm grateful for, but I've paid into this insurance for 17yrs, this is my point, I feel I've have been missold this insurance, and I really dont want to continue paying it if it's of no use to me, but I also was looking advice if it's worth pursuing it as in i.e the ombudsman?

so when I had to stop work because of covid-19, I thought great, mortgage will be covered and a little bit left over to live on, 12wks later and I'm getting no where,

You wouldn't get anywhere as you are attempting to claim for something the policy does not cover.
it covers accident, sickness and unemployment.

You have not been in an accident.

    You are not sick

    You are not unemployed

Should I turn to the ombudsman or seek legal advice?

No. There is no wrongdoing here.  Just a misunderstanding on your part.

I feel I've have been missold this insurance,

Just because you cannot claim for something does not mean you have been missold.  However, even if you were missold you have missed the deadline as that closed August last year.

Thanks for the advice, I can still make a claim for mis-sold ,I will just have to go to small claims court,  I will seek independent advice and go from there , I was technically unemployed and claiming universal credits untill I got SE income grant
    Again thanks for advice

Can you explain why you think it was missold? I can't see a case from what you've told us.

you appear to be timebarred from the courts as well:

Negligence (in respect of latent damage): three years or six years, subject to a maximum period 15 years from the negligent act or omission.

You say you bought 17 years ago.

That is on top of the issue that you haven't actually given any grounds in your posts so far that suggest it was missold.  You cannot take them to court on the basis that they are not paying out for something that is not covered on the policy and that fact does not make the policy missold in the first place.

, I was technically unemployed and claiming universal credits untill I got SE income grant

Unemployed = signing on and ceasing trading permanently.   There is no technical opinion on what unemployed means.  Were you signing on as unemployed and had you ceased trading permanently?

I understood that this was the issue with these types of insurance- inevitably life isn't as clear cut as the coverage offered and therefore you inevitably aren't covered.

Anyone have a positive story to counteract that? Without wanting to hop onto the OP s thread, this has been of interest lately..
