Exterior painting, half plaster, half brick

Couldn't find an answer on the net so hoping for some advice please.
I've bought a small bungalow that is render at the top half and brick at the bottom half. I'd like to repaint the render but I'm not sure of 2 things (at least).
Do I need to cover the brick to stop splashes? If so will masking tape stick a covering over the brick or is there a better way?
Also what sort of brush to use? The render isn't totally smooth, just like a sand mixed into the render but not bumpy enough to need anything special.
Really grateful for some ideas on this.

Plastic sheet taped on with duct tape and a spray gun or woolly roller.

If you do want to use a brush, then there are large brushes intended for masonry paint.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

And prepare for aching arms. Painting render involves a lot of drag against the brush loaded with paint. Good for muscle building, remember to change hands often to avoid looking like a lop sided Popeye.

Thank you everyone. I'm ambidextrous, need to work on the bingo wings so it maybe brush because this place is tiny. I have plenty of duct tape and a roller and extension handle too. Never done this sort of place before. Last one pebbledash and garden beneath which took surplus paint.
