I am in a similar situation. Does anyone know it it's possible to relinquish Child benefit early  so that a young person can claim UC form the end of June when their course finishes ? I don't get any Uc myself or child tax credits for my son.
No, you can not do that because the young person will not be eligible to claim UC as long as they are officially still classed as a student. It's normally the first week in September they can claim benefits. If they try to claim benefits before then the claim will be closed as not eligible.
I guess it's the same guidance that allows Child Benefit and Child Tax Credits/UC Child element to be paid to the parent until the beginning of September.

Thanks. It seems a bit unfair when his course finishes in June and he is looking for work and I don't claim ant tax credits or Uc child element for him. He is nearly 20 and if he can't find work I'm expected to keep him until September when he can claim UC himself ?

Thanks Poppy. So if he was lucky enough to find a full time job now as he has finished college, does that mean I will have to let child benefit know and payments will cease or do I continue getting those until the end of August regardless?

You will continue to receive benefits for him until end of Aug regardless as he is still classified as a student until end of Aug, irrespective of whether he also has a job or not.

This link says cb stops if they are over 16 and work more than 24 hours a week.

Information is better here on this one. If still in full time non advanced education it continues even if they are working more than 24 hours per week. https://www.gov.uk/child-benefit/eligibility

You’ll stop receiving Child Benefit immediately if your child:

    • starts paid work for 24 hours or more a week and is no longer in approved education or training
    • starts an apprenticeship in England
    • starts getting certain benefits in their own right, such as Income Support, Employment and Support Allowance or tax credits

You have taken this out of context, it only says that in the section about what happens if education or training has ended. If still in approved education or training this limitation does not apply.
When approved education or training ends
When your child leaves approved education or training, payments will stop at the end of February, 31 May, 31 August or 30 November (whichever comes first).
    Apply for an extension
You could get Child Benefit for 20 weeks (called an ‘extension’) if your child leaves approved education or training and either:
    • registers with their local careers service, Connexions (or a similar organisation in Northern Ireland, the EU, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein)
    • signed up to join the armed forces
    To qualify your child must:
    • be 16 or 17
    • work less than 24 hours a week
    • not get certain benefits (for example Income Support)
You must have been entitled to Child Benefit immediately before they left the approved education or training and apply for it within 3 months of them leaving.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

Ah yes.    I can see the difference now.
