Even in the advice it only says you must make every effort to work from home if you can, not that you must. Although would have been helpful for them to put a bit more information in there.Refer them to this https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/guidance-on-shielding-and-protecting-extremely-vulnerable-persons-from-covid-19/guidance-on-shielding-and-protecting-extremely-vulnerable-persons-from-covid-19
Under Staying at Home and ShieldingThe Government is currently advising people to shield until 30 June 2020 and is regularly monitoring this position.0 -
None of this is compulsory. The guidance is clear that it is up to the person who is being advised to shield whether or not they wish to follow the guidance. However they do have a legal right to be treated as sick and to be paid SSP if their work is not capable of being done from home.sharpe106 said:Wghcalcotti said:

I guess at some point the community prevalance of the virus will be so low that shielding will no longer be needed as the vulnerable person is unlikely to come into contact with an infected person. Maybe the government anticipate this being in 2 weeks as the prevalance is falling weekly and is now <0.1% of the population (so fewer than 1 in 1000 people in the UK are infected).0
