I had thought this would be the case but I have seen cases where people have had money reversed from their accounts for occasions where they have received money incorrectly and not been notified about this. So they say anyway.

Reversed on what grounds and via what process?  Do you have any links?

Like eskbanker. I am not aware of anyway to recall/reverse a Standing Order.  Even stating it had been sent to a wrong account should see the bank checking (as it will have previously been paid) and acc holder being told sorry. Can't do that.
