Which category do you come under and what does it say?
It's fairly clear in those that the COMPLETE trip is for essential purposes in other words you travel out to fix something and then travel back, not go on holiday and then claim the return journey is because your an essential worker0 -
Where does the Royal Mail have operational sites in those countries? Not just a question of returning from. You'll need to comply with the requirements of being in those countries.ianbeale_steeplecocque said:I was due to drive to Italy on June 22nd, travelling to South Tyrol and possibly Switzerland. I work as a maintenance engineer for Royal Mail, which as far as I know means I am exempt from the travel quarantine as follows:0 -

Let's quote the full information from your original post, and not just a paragraph.....
It's quite clear, the work needs to be the reason you are travelling. You're looking for a loophole that doesn't exist. Your HR department is correct.Workers with specialist technical skills for essential or emergency works or services (including commissioning, maintenance, and repairs and safety checks) to ensure the continued production, supply, movement, manufacture, storage or preservation of goods
You’ll need to complete the Public Health passenger locator form before you travel to the UK. You will not need to self-isolate for 14 days.
You should show a letter from your company which includes:
- your personal details, such as name and address
- contact details for your employer
- contact details for the business or organisation you’ll be completing work for in the UK
- what work you’ll be doing
If your employer issued you with photo identification, you should bring this with you to the UK
You’ll need to show that your travel to the UK is essential for your work here, for example a letter from your employer, a consignment note or your operator’s licence.

Does everything need to be spelt out for you ? I'm sure your work colleagues would be happy to know that you are putting your holiday before their welfare. Knowing the Royal Mail will probably cause a walk out.ianbeale_steeplecocque said:
The rules don't mention why you left the country, they only talk about once you enter the UK. The original article did not say "travelling for work", it just said "Workers with specialist technical skills". When I emailed HR there was no detail on that page, just a list of job descriptions, including mine. That to me looked like someone with my job was exempt.
Not looking for a loophole, I was just looking for clarification.0 -

The advice is meant to get people into the country that have the needed skills if abroad, not so the skilled staff can take a holiday. I think any sensible person would not need that clarified. It also says essential, so you need to be needed not that you happen to do the job.0

You put this :
"Workers with specialist technical skills for essential or emergency works or services (including commissioning, maintenance, and repairs and safety checks) to ensure the continued production, supply, movement, manufacture, storage or preservation of goods".
Note : the first word is 'workers'. Not tourists.
You also put : I've asked my HR department who have said that as I'm travelling for leisure, I'm not exempt.
You have answered your own question.
Apart from anything else, it'd be extremely selfish of you to drive to Italy, previously one of the worst coronavirus-hit countries in the world. And you'd have to go by ferry first of all, the advice for travelling on ferries is : Brits are urged against travelling by ferry unless returning home or for important work such as medical services.
You are not even working, and even if you were you are not in the medical services.
The guidelines actually DO make it very specific that you are NOT exempt. You are not essential and you wouldn't even be travelling to work in Europe. So I'd say don't go because not only will you not be allowed, you may end up with a hefty fine.
