  • @unforeseen - I've actually just made this account because I felt the need to response to this comment, maybe because I am in a similar situation as the OP but assuming that he/she is going off to a 'holiday home' is quite frankly suggestive. Just because someone has a parent that lives abroad all year round does not imply they are going on holiday when they see them. Would you feel this way if someone was visiting family in Cornwall?  Unlikely. If anything, holiday homes must be a bit of a sore spot for you, seems to have hit a nerve!

Nobody has said they can or can't it is up the employer people have only suggested reasons why the employer might say no.

I don't think that's what unforeseen was saying at all!  For example, my company specifically has a policy to say that you cannot take your laptop abroad on holiday with you, even going so far as to give the example that you can work from home before your holiday, and on your return, but you can't go on holiday abroad with your family and work from there (unless you have permission in advance).  This is different from the policy about working abroad generally, and from the expectation that you would agree situations like the OPs with the line manager.  It's not uncommon.  So I don't think unforseen was implying that OP working from their parents house was skiving (as I assume is your objection), but just that it might be against the rules, giving a specific example.

As alluded to earlier there may be a case that the company do not allow their IT equipment to leave the UK.
My company will only allow you to take your company laptop abroad if it for a business visit,
A bit of a tangent, but I just realised that my form of contract prohibits me from doing or processing any work from outside the EU.  It was never changed from January, even though I mentioned the restriction, it was suggested I was asking for an unnecessary change.  Could I, therefore, now base myself on the beach in Spain and refuse to come back? :smiley:

Congratulations on making a new account to point out your misunderstanding of what I wrote. I never suggested that the op (you?) were going to a holiday home. Read my post again and actually attempt to understand what I said.
My company will only allow you to take your company laptop abroad if it for a business visit, not to work from your holiday home in Marbella or wherever. There must be a specific reason.
I then pointed out that WFH at a relatives would not be considered a business purpose because it is not a person's home.

In other words company rules (and a lot of companies have similar rules) would not allow what the op is wanting to do because there is not a valid reason to take company equipment abroad.

It's all about taking the stuff abroad, and these days data especially with GDPR.
