Recycled Phone - Wrong Bank Details

Hi All,

I recently got a new phone, and recycled my old one to pay for part of it. Super. Unfortunately, the payment didn't turn up on my bank statement, so I contacted the recycling company. It emerged that I'd given them the wrong account number (correct sort code). Let's believe that the mistake is mine and not theirs, although there is no way for me to be sure at this point.

I contacted the bank, and they confirmed that the money had been paid into the one-digit-different account. They said the retailer needs to ask for the payment to be recalled and re-made. I contacted the retailer, and they refused. Their position is that they've made the payment as requested and that's all.

What are you thoughts on what I should do next? It's £80, so not inconsiderable. Without the details of the person who's account my money is in, nor the cooperation of the retailer, I don't see what I can do. Do I just need to write just off the £80 and get on with my life?

I think if you don't have of the bank details you provided the recycling shop, it's going to be impossible to prove they've breached a contract for not paying you. If this is the case, put it down to back experience, and next time take copies of forms.
