My MOT expires beginning of July so I can (I think) get the 6 month extension?
That being the case what will the new expiry date be? Will it still be next July or will it be in 18 months time? If it's next July anyway I might as well get the MOT done now but I'll wait if it means it will expire in January 2022!
Thanks

6 months is added to the existing MOT expiry date, so beginning of July 202 becomes beginning of January 2021. The subsequent MOT expiry date will be January 2022.
I'm also waiting anxiously, I wonder how much notice they will give to cancel the automatic extensions, given that garages and MoT stations are opening up now?I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. I don't think it changes the MOT date permanently.0 -
Hmm, slightly conflicting views there - I've got it booked in next week as it's within the month of the due date. Wondering whether to cancel to see what happens. But if it's still going to end up expiring in July 2021 I might as well just get it done. It's very unclear.0

I think that's because there's been a few confusing replies.JenFrNo said:Hmm, slightly conflicting views there - I've got it booked in next week as it's within the month of the due date. If your MOT expires early July (assuming the extensions are still being given then) then up to a week before expiry the new date will be in 6 months time. So yours will then be early January 2021.
When it comes to January 2021 and you have your MOT, it'll be a year from that date, so the following MOT will be due January 2022.
If you have it booked in already, then personally i'd just get it done. The government might not give much of an announcement for when they end the 6 month extensions, and that could leave a lot of people with very little time to get an MOT booked in. Or face not being able to use their car.1 -
In addition, it doesn't absolve you from the responsibility of driving a roadworthy car.1

The MOT period going forward after the extension will continue to be 12 months from the last MOT date, it would be far too complicated to do anything else.Jeremy535897 said:See https://www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavirus-covid-19-mots-for-cars-vans-and-motorcycles-due-from-30-march-2020

That's what I would have assumed, but for the simple point that nobody seems prepared to say so.neilmcl said:

Current MOT expires 1st July and auto-extended until 1st January.JenFrNo said:My MOT expires beginning of July so I can (I think) get the 6 month extension?

If you get the new MOT done now, it will be 12-months from now.
If you get the new MOT in December, it will be 12-months from 1st January.1
