My British Gas electric bill has tripled for no reason

Options
Since February my electric bill has shot up massively despite me using LESS electric. I don’t know what to do and when ever I call British Gas they say that’s what I’ve used so I have to pay it.
I’ve not used any new appliances, there’s only me at home and I work fill time so the house is empty during the day.  What do I do??

  • This is my online bill so you can see what I mean. I moved in during august.
  • Hi,
can you give some meter readings please and whether they were estimated or actual readings.
Do you give BG regular monthly readings?

Might be obvious to say but anything that generates heat will guzzle power. You say you moved in August - do you now have an electric cooker and gas before? New tumble dryer?

Have you been locked down at home ?

Are you 100% sure that the bill is for the correct meter ? Check the serial number on the bill with that on the meter itself ?
let us have the meter readings from when you moved in to today ? Are the letters against the reading A, E or C ? Read your meter today?

Has the meter been changed recently ?

All as per all posters above. Click on the download button beside each month and supply readings "From To" by date and if there is A,E or C, against each reading. Have you been checking your meter each month as always advised?

Also what tariff are you on? Standing charge cost and price per Kwh?

Have you been at home during this time where normally you may have been at work or the kids at school etc.

Have computers & TV's been chugging away all day, have you been using the cooker, washer, etc more frequently because you are at home. Any crafty use of fan heaters or extra use of electric showers etc.  And, as everyone else has said, have you actually been checking your meter readings against your bills.

Even if you've got smart meters, you still need to read them yourself - at the meter not on the IHD - to make sure that your bills really are using the readings and not estimates.

Op in your new thread that you started to day, you say you have been off work since march? since the lockdown started. But husband is still working.

Perhaps you being in the house all day? has led to an increase in what you are using? Is there any children also perhaps using more power, TV, computers, etc?

Immersion heater instead of gas used for hot water?
Immersion heater boost switch left on?
Local timer for immersion heater out of kilter with Economy 7 cheap rate hours?
    Instantaneous electric shower in use?
    Plug in electric heaters?
Very easy to misread old rotating pointer models, decimal point hard to see on modern ones?
Fridge or freezer door not sealing properly, e.g. ice build up?
