The current growth market in the UK window sector is Aluminium. I've been involved with the Grand Designs program 3 times and each time my customers client (the householder) used Aluminium. Nobody paints wood anymore if you want White buy Ali or if that's too costly then it's PVC. Wooden windows are great if they are of the highest quality. I've been involved with a lot of product into the type of homes you see on GD for years, every single one was either Ali or Woodgrumbler said:
Were there many real wood windows, not painted in white, before PVC came? Were white windows tasteless? Is white PVC worse than wood painted white?ytfcmad said:nobody with a big house money and taste would have PVC.2 -
That's Ral 7016 Anthracite Grey, next to White its the biggest selling colour for windows domestically and commercially currently in the UK.The new dark grey uPVC frames and doors look good, in my humble, but it's all personal preference.2 -
This is fashion (and, indeed, snobbery in some cases), not taste. Big difference. And, I think very few of 'GRAND designs' sort of people come to MSE for advice.ytfcmad said:

We saw some today on a house & I have to say they looked really smart. The new dark grey uPVC frames and doors look good, in my humble, but it's all personal preference.
would've . . . could've . . . should've . . .

The windows of the house - built 2006 - I was alluding to in my original post had treated (possibly kiln-dried?) wood frames & grey metal (aluminium presumably) sub-frames. They were very smart. Not using plastic was de rigeur a few years ago but that seems to have all gone out of the window (pun intended) in these dystopian times.ytfcmad said:

It’ll be a case in the end of achieving a balance between being environmentally friendly, budget & aesthetics.

My only point when quoting you first time was the word TASTE in your post.Big money - yes. Big house - questionable. Taste- no.0

I guess many from the very first PVC frames are still alive and, if were replaced, then mainly because of better designs became available, not because of deterioration. With regard to discolouration, my 25+ y.o. PVC windows, despite very poor mechanical quality, are perfectly white. That said, when comparing, I meant only aesthetics and "taste"Most of our windows are the originals, so 115 years old. Wooden windows can last forever but the maintenance is obviously much higher.1
