The Embassy in London advised me that citizenship, if granted, did not follow on to my children, and that my spouse was not eligible in any scenario.

At my age it was/is not worth the candle to pursue the matter, especially as 'er indoors , our son and grandkids would not be able to apply.

My grandfather was born in Ireland.

"Rules are :-

You are automatically an Irish citizen if one of your parents was an Irish citizen at the time of your birth and was born on the island of Ireland. You don’t need to apply to become an Irish citizen in this case.

You can become an Irish citizen if:

1. One of your grandparents was born on the island of Ireland, or;
2. One of your parents was an Irish citizen at the time of your birth, even though they were not born on the island of Ireland.

In these cases, you can become an Irish citizen through Foreign Birth Registration."

So, any child I have now can apply through FBR, any child I currently have can't and their children can't either.

As I don't live in an EU Country I can't get an EHIC, and to quote

"A Department of Health spokesperson confirmed to TheJournal.ie that the EHIC is issued not on the basis of someone’s nationality but instead issued based on a person’s residency in an EU country. 

“Although an individual may be an Irish passport holder, as they are resident in the UK, the issuance and continued validity of UK issued EHIC cards is a matter for the relevant British authorities,” the spokesperson said."
