Cheaper Train Journeys (Day Return)

This message was posted on the noticeboard at work and I thought it was a great MS tip.
It is based on a useful general principal: cheap day return tickets are available only for journeys up to 50 miles, but you can still use them on longer journeys by splitting your journey into shorter stages. The only restriction is that your trains must be scheduled to stop at the boundary station.
All ticket offices are obliged to sell any ticket you require between any stations, so you shouldn't get any quibbles when buying tickets on the above basis.

Anyone who has to travel by train between Glasgow and Dundee might be interested in the following tip.
The cheapest advertised fares for a journey out and back on the same day are the Supersaver at £22.00 and the Saver at £31.50.
However, you can buy separate Cheap Day return tickets for Glasgow-Perth (£9.90) and Perth-Dundee (£5.50) which adds up to £15.10. (These tickets are not valid during the peak morning period, so they won't be suitable for every journey).
