We are due to fly to Edinburgh at the end of July for a nieces wedding. Hotel and flights booked and paid for prior to lockdown. The wedding is cancelled, the flights will be restarted but date and time changed adding an extra nights stay. Sadly I didn't book a cancellable room at the hotel and they don't want to know, cancel and they keep the money. Looking on the hotel website they still appear to be taking bookings although I thought none essential travel in Scotland was forbidden. I haven't studied the insurance I took out at the time but would not be hopeful. Any advice on this would be welcome or do I just bite the bullet and lose the money?

    Did you pay in full?
The problem you have is that no-one knows what rules will be in place at the end of July. If they are still closed and they cancel they will have to give you a refund. If they are open and you cancel or don’t turn up you will lose your payment.

You can't stay now but who knows in 6 weeks times. That is the reason why non-cancellable rooms are cheaper if you change your mind you can't change it, otherwise everybody would book that.

  • Agree with others, if the hotel is open you won't have any hope of getting a refund.   Where are you travelling from?   If it is any consolation, a few years ago I did exactly same for a wedding in Edinburgh, booked cheaper non refundable rooms.  The wedding was called off but I was unable to get my money back (booked 5 rooms for various people).   What we did was...went anyway and had a fantastic time, just minus the wedding.

There has been an announcement today that accommodation providers in Scotland will be allowed to open from the 15th of July.
